BRITISH OLYMPIC DIVING COACH DAVID JENKINS, 31, DIES

British Swimming revealed on Monday that David Jenkins, a member of Great Britain’s diving coaching crew for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, died over the weekend. He was 31 years old at the time.

Jenkins was the Development Lead Coach at Dive London, one of the best diving programs in the country, based at the London Aquatics Centre. He was a part of that program for eight years. There, he was tutored by Jane Figueroa, a well-known coach.

He coached two young divers who competed for Great Britain at the Tokyo Olympics, Noah Williams and Scarlett Mew-Jensen. Williams, who is 21 years old, finished 27th in the 10-meter platform event, while Mew-Jensen, who is 19 years old, finished 22nd in the 3-meter springboard event.

Dive London is home to Olympic gold medalists Tom Daley and Matty Lee, who won the 10 meters synchronized platform event in Tokyo. Jenkins was not their primary coach.

Jenkins previously coached teams at both the World and European Championships, as well as Team England at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. Williams took silver in the Men’s 10m Synchro event.

Jenkins was then nominated for the British Swimming Awards’ Diving Coach of the Year in 2018.

British Swimming released a statement saying, “David had a bright future ahead of him and would be deeply missed by everyone he worked with across British Diving and GLL.”

“Everyone at Swim England is profoundly grieved to hear of David’s passing,” said Jane Nickerson, chief executive of Swim England.

“He was a well-respected coach who helped develop several divers who went on to compete in the Commonwealth Games, World Championships, and Olympics.”
