Vardy said in June 2020 that he was suing Rooney for slander, with legal fees expected to total £500,000 on each side.
After a libel preliminary hearing at the High Court in London on November 19, 2020, Mr. Justice Warby found in Vardy’s favor on November 20, 2020. Rooney and Vardy were both absent from the court. Vardy was awarded over £23,000 in court fees, which Rooney was ordered to pay. The couple had until February 8, 2021, to try to settle their dispute through mediation.
