On September 25, 1993, Robert O’Dubaine was shot twice and died while entering the garage of his Chicago home. Catherine Suh, O’Dubaine’s live-in lover, was questioned by authorities and eventually revealed that she had intended for him to be murdered. Andrew Suh, her 19-year-old brother, admitted to being the gunman when she was arrested. Following their mother’s murder when he was 13 and she was 18, Andrew Suh’s sister became his legal guardian. O’Dubaine, who was 25 at the time, had begun dating Catherine Suh a few months before the family tragedy and moved in with her.
Andrew Suh subsequently said that O’Dubaine became like a brother to him, but that his sister began urging him to kill O’Dubaine while he was a sophomore in college, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Suh said his sister claimed that O’Dubaine was physically assaulting her and wasting her money and that she also told him that O’Dubaine was responsible for their mother’s murder years ago, according to the Tribune.
According to court filings, Andrew claimed he hid in the garage for hours until Catherine Suh persuaded her boyfriend there. For stealing O’Dubaine’s car and wallet, Andrew Suh was arrested and charged with murder, armed robbery, vehicular hijacking, and burglary.
