On August 9, Mary McCann, 35, collided with an HGV on the M1 northbound near Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire. Aylesbury Crown Court heard that Lilly, four, and Smaller, ten, were not wearing seatbelts and died at the scene.
The mother of four was given a four-year and one-month term. She was also given a seven-year and two-week driving suspension. McCann, of Derby’s Bamford Avenue, had previously guilty to two counts of causing death by careless driving while inebriated.
She appeared in court via video link from HMP Bronze field in Ashford, Surrey, and sobbed the entire time. McCann was in lane one, while the lorry was in lane two, according to the court.
In an attempt to dodge the lorry, her car slid into lane two and collided with it. McCann was traveling at 72 mph in a 60-mph zone, according to prosecutor Stephen Shay. The court heard that Lilly was thrown from the car and recovered on the side of the road, while Smaller was thrown around the backseat and found slumped in the footwell.
