Gavin Kelly, the CEO of the Road Freight Association, where Schüssler worked as an economist, said he learned of his death from Schüssler’s family on Tuesday morning.

Schüssler was battling his health, Kelly said in a statement. Schüssler wrote in a tweet of an inflation graph on March 14, just over two months ago, that he was “doing this as a service today as still sick but getting back now – defeating cancer.”

“Our sincere condolences go to Greta [Moodie] and his family. We will miss you, Mike,” Kelly said.

“A great stalwart of the industry has fallen.”

Economists.co.za was started by Schüssler in 2005. Schüssler was named South African Economist of the Year twice in 2005 and finished fourth in the Reuters economic competition in 2010.
