The 21-year-Paralympic old’s debut ended with a fourth-place finish in the 100m backstroke S14, a 0.99-second margin of victory.
Catchpole was knocked off the podium by ParalympicsGB teammate Reece Dunn, but he emerged triumphant from his first Paralympic experience.
He stated, “Honestly, I’m happy.”
“When I first came out here, I had no idea what to anticipate. I’m overjoyed to have won a gold medal in the relay. I’m not sure what else I could ask for.
“I gave it my all in the 100-yard dash, so I can’t complain.”
Catchpole’s silver medal in the backstroke at the 2019 World Championships in London fueled great expectations for the event in the Olympics.
Catchpole was seventh at the 50m mark in the final but came roaring back to narrowly miss a medal.

In the 200m freestyle, Catchpole advanced to the final and placed sixth, while Dunn set a new world record.
He also finished 16th in the 100m butterfly and missed qualifying for the final of the 200m individual medley by a single position.
Catchpole’s most remarkable performance came when he set a world record in the mixed 4x100m S14 relay with a 52.68 anchor leg.
“It’s been fantastic,” he said.
“Obviously, without a crowd and everything, it’s a strange first Games, so I’m really thrilled with how I’ve been, and I can take some nice tips from this meet.”
