In late April, Ellzey and Susan Wright received the most votes and progressed to a runoff, effectively eliminating any Democratic contenders in the open primary.

“Jake will be a strong and effective leader for the people of North Texas, and he will fight hard for their values in Washington,” Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott said in a statement. “I look forward to working alongside Jake as we keep Texas the greatest state in the nation.”

This is the first time since Mr. Trump’s departure from the government that a candidate he sponsored has lost an election.

The defeat came as a result of a candidate who aggressively emphasized their ties to Mr. Trump as the campaign heated up.

On Monday, the former president held a televised rally in support of Susan Wright and made a last-minute $100,000 payment to her campaign the weekend before the election.

Ellzey was the top fundraiser in both the primary and the runoff, and his victory kept the district in Republican hands in the rapidly changing Dallas suburbs.
