On Thursday, Anthony Todt, a Connecticut physical therapist, was convicted guilty of murdering his wife and three children in their Celebration home over two years ago. Todt was found guilty on four counts of first-degree murder by jurors about 6:50 p.m. in the murders of his 42-year-old wife Megan, his 4-year-old daughter Zoe, and his two sons Alek, 13, and Tyler, 11.

He was also found guilty of animal cruelty for the death of Breezy, the family dog. “I maintain my innocence,” Todt said after the verdict was read in court. “I adore my wife,” he said. My children are my pride and joy.

He said, “I was not there the night my children died.” Todt was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of release by the judge, who dubbed him a “destroyer of universes.” The jury deadlocked was summoned into the courtroom before reaching a judgment, and the judge read what is known as the Allen charge, which is additional instruction to allow the jury to discuss their decisions and provide jurors in the minority opinion an opportunity to reconsider their positions.

The prosecution stated in closing arguments that the reason they are in court boils down to control, which is exactly what Todt intended. The defense maintained that the story surrounding the slayings is riddled with inconsistencies and gaps, casting reasonable doubt on Todt’s culpability. Prosecutors and defense attorneys both rested their cases on Wednesday.

Todt’s attorneys brought him to the stand to testify.

Todt blamed his wife for his children’s deaths while on the stand, saying he returned home to find the children dead and blood on his wife’s clothes. He claimed he was devastated, that he tried to cover for his wife, and that he attempted suicide multiple times. “At least eight times,” Todt stated, adding that he tried to overdose on Benadryl multiple times. “All I wanted to do was be with my family.”

According to autopsy results, the victims’ decomposing bodies were wrapped in blankets and had stab wounds as well as deadly levels of Benadryl when they were discovered in January 2020.

When federal officials and deputies went to the house to serve an arrest warrant for health care fraud charges in Connecticut, they discovered the bodies.

A detective who interrogated Todt following the slayings in January 2020 also testified before the jury.Todt first confessed to the murders, but in prison writings, he has since blamed the deaths on his wife. Investigators suspect the family members were killed weeks before he was apprehended in January 2020.
