Mikhail Gorbacheva was married to Raisa Gorbacheva who was also of Russian nationality from September 1953 to her death on September 20, 1999. After their marriage, in January 1957 Raisa gave birth to her only daughter Irina Mikhailovna.

Raisa left the post of lecturer at Moscow State University when her husband became General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1985. Raisa’s public appearances beside her husband as the first lady were a novelty at home and went long way in humanizing the country’s image because of this, she was one of the few wives of a communist party leader to have a high public profile of her own.

Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbacheva was a Russian and Soviet politician who served as the last leader of the Soviet Union and was born on 2 March 1931. As the country’s head of state from 1988 to 1991, he served as Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet from the year 1988 to 1989, Chairman of  Supreme Soviet from 1989 to 1990, and also a General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1985 to 1991. Mikhail was President of the Soviet Union from 1990 until the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. And also a great leader in Russia’s history.

In 1990 Mikhail Gorbacheva won the Nobel Peace Prize for “his leading role in the peace process which today characterizes one of the most important parts of the international community”. Sadly, the great leader passed away on 30 August 2022 in the Central Clinical Hospital at the age of 91.

Raisa Maximovna Titarenko was born in the city of Rubtsovsk in the Altai region of Siberia. She was the eldest of three children of Maxim Andreyevich Titarenko, who was a railway engineer originally from Chernihiv in Ukraine. Raisa’s Mother was Siberian wife, Alexandra Petrovna Porada, originally from Veseloyarsk. Raisa’s younger brother’s name is Yevgeny Titarenko.

And in the year 1949, she left secondary school with a gold medal in Sterlitamak, Barshkiria as she was a brilliant student. Raisa Titarenko chose to enter the Philosophy Department of Moscow State University and she met her future husband while studying philosophy in Moscow. After that, she earned an advanced degree from Moscow State Pedagogical Institute. After her graduation, she also taught for a short time at Moscow State University.

In July 1999, Raisa was diagnosed with leukemia by the Institute of Haematology. Shortly after, she traveled with her husband and her daughter to Münster in Germany for treatment at the medical clinic of Münster University Hospital. However, she died on 20 September at the age of 67.

After her death in 2006, her family founded the Raisa Gorbacheva Foundation, which raises money to support those with Childhood Cancer. And again in 2007, the Raisa Gorbacheva Institute of Pediatric Hematology and Transplantology, a division of First Pavlov State Medical University in St. Petersburg, was opened.
