After four years of anchoring the popular breakfast radio show for the public broadcaster, the two made the announcement on Friday.

When they deliver their final set of presentations before their final show on December 10, the duo stated they planned to ‘go out on a high.’

‘I hadn’t worked with Robbie but the decision to put us together on brekkie turned out to be inspired,’ Harmer, 65, said of the partnership with Buck, 49.

‘We’ve got to know each other at the same time as the audience and it has blossomed into a fabulous on-air partnership and a wonderful friendship too.’

Buck, who’s been with the ABC for 25 years and was a previous host on youth network Triple J, shared Harmer’s sentiments when he announced their departure.

‘We always enjoyed each other’s company and I think that’s what’s made the partnership so good,’ he said.   

Buck added that he will return to the national broadcaster in 2023 after taking some time off.  

‘I now plan to take a year away from the mic and see the world. It’s not goodbye to the ABC.’

He explained on-air that the duo’s decision to step down had been made ‘quite a while ago.

ABC Breakfast Sydney was one of the national broadcaster’s most popular radio programs, and it was also the second most popular in Sydney’s crowded breakfast radio market.

ABC Breakfast Sydney received its highest ratings in some years in a recent radio poll.

The final broadcast of Buck and Harmer will occur on Friday, December 10.

In 2006, Caroline Tran took the reins of Home and Hosed, and Robbie started a new program Top Shelf Radio, airing in the afternoon drive timeslot from 3 – 5:30 pm. He remained the host of the program until the end of the 2007 ratings period, to make way for Dools and Linda in 2008, hosted by Scott Dooley and Linda Marigliano. Robbie subsequently joined Lindsay McDougall and Marieke Hardy to host the new breakfast show, Robbie, Marieke and The Doctor.
