“Everywhere Mr. Gargiulo went, death and destruction followed him,” said Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Larry Fidler as the families of his victims sobbed in court.

Gargiulo is suspected of stabbing his 18-year-old neighbor Tricia Pacaccio to death on her backdoor step. On August 14, 1993, her father discovered her body the next morning.

Gargiulo moved to Los Angeles in 1998, purportedly to avoid police investigation in Illinois, and between 2001 and 2008, he committed two murders and attempted murder in Southern California.
Ashley Ellerin’s Death
One of Gargiulo’s victims died just before they were supposed to go on a date with actor Ashton Kutcher two decades ago, bringing his case to national attention.
He stabbed 22-year-old Ashley Ellerin 47 times to death in her Hollywood home on February 21, 2001. Ellerin’s injuries included an almost severed neck wound and extensive punctures to the chest, stomach, and back that were up to six inches deep in some cases.
Ms. Ellerin was supposed to go on a date with Ashton Kutcher, who went on to star in The Butterfly Effect and Two and a Half Men since then.
The actor, who would have been roughly 23 years old at the time of the trial, testified in court. He described how when he went to pick up Ms. Ellerin from her Hollywood house, she did not answer the door, and when he looked inside, he saw what he assumed were wine stains but were actually her bloodstains.
Maria Bruno’s Death
Gargiulo stabbed his neighbor Maria Bruno, 32, to death at her house in El Monte, California, on December 1, 2005. She had 17 stab wounds. Her breasts had been cut off and her implants had been removed when her body was discovered.

Michelle Murphy’s Attempted Murder Case
On April 28, 2008, Gargiulo attempted to murder another of his neighbors, Michelle Murphy, 26, in her Santa Monica house. She was able to repel the attack, and blood that matched Gargiulo’s DNA was discovered at the location.

The Santa Monica Police Department arrested Gargiulo on June 6, 2008. Gargiulo was charged with the first-degree murder of Tricia Pacaccio by the Cook County State’s Attorney on July 7, 2011.
