Born on March 24, 1970, in Austin, Texas, Dareh grew up in the city with his two older brothers, Vahe and Raffi. Dareh earned his bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass communication from Boston University in 1992 and started working as a reporter and editor at the New York Post in January 1996.

Dareh was an Armenian-American academic, scholar, and philanthropist. He was born in Iran to Armenian parents who had fled the Armenian Genocide and later moved to Lebanon where he received his early education. He then moved to the United States to attend Stanford University, where he received his BA and Ph.D. in history.

Throughout his career, Gregorian held a number of prestigious academic positions, including professorships at San Francisco State University, the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Pennsylvania, and Brown University. He also served as the president of the New York Public Library, and as the president of Brown University from 1989 to 1997.

Gregorian was also known for his philanthropic efforts. He served as the president of the Carnegie Corporation of New York, one of the largest charitable foundations in the world, from 1997 until his death in 2021. During his time at the Carnegie Corporation, he supported a wide range of causes, including education, the arts, and international peace and security.

Dareh Ardashes Gregorian’s Mother is Clare Gregorian

His mother served as the president and subsequently as the chairwoman of Literacy Partners located in Manhattan.

She was acknowledged as a community and volunteer leader in numerous states and cities while being a staunch supporter of women’s rights, literacy, and the arts. Clare was recognized as the key impetus behind the creation of Rhode Island Public Radio. She died on April 28, 2018, at the age of 80.
