South Auckland, Kia Aroha student died

A youngster died this morning at a South Auckland school after a medical issue. Around 10.30 a.m., the event occurred at Kia Aroha College in Clover Park.

Around 11 a.m., a Kia Aroha College spokesperson verified the medical event to the Herald as teachers gathered for an emergency meeting to assess the situation.

Principal Haley Milne reported the death of a pupil on the Kia Aroha College Facebook page shortly after.

“He aituā, he aituā! Our beautiful tama has passed away at our school today. We are currently sending all of our young people home while we wait for the details of his tangi,” Milne said.

“Once we have details we will post them here. Our school will be closed in the meantime.”

Officers were still at the Clover Park school as of 12.30 p.m. today, according to a police spokesperson. They confirmed an unexpected death had occurred there this morning.

“This is an understandably a tragic event however Police can advise that at this stage, there are no suspicious circumstances.

“We will be working to ensure there is support available for this person’s family.”
