Now, the issue has resurfaced as NBC Dateline announced a special show that delves more into the Chambers’ disappearance and murder.

Exclusive interviews with Chambers’ parents, as well as private detectives and attorneys who worked on the case, are featured in the episodes.

The two-hour special edition will appear on NBC Dateline at 9 p.m. on Friday.

‘Dateline’: James Chambers’ mysterious disappearance, murder

(NBC News) — North Carolina detectives have been looking for clues in the death of James Chambers, a 28-year-old Fayetteville construction worker, since his disappearance in August 2014.

The twists and turns of this case are examined in Friday’s all-new “Dateline,” which features Andrea Canning’s exclusive interviews with James family members who will be heard for the first time and investigators at the center of the case.

PETE CHAMBERS: I’m sorry, but I’m unable to attend. I tried calling him, texting him, but I never got a response. So I said to e–, “Well, I’ll just let it go for a day or two.” Then Tuesday arrives and he isn’t there.

Rachel was in a panic now.

RACHEL WELLHOUSER (RACHEL WELLHOUSER): I begin to blast up his phone. “Marco,” I left a message.

Her family’s emergency code word was “Marco.”

RACHEL WELLHOUSER: My daughter and son, as well as my husband and me, have always known that we needed a safety word, someone to call right away. James, however, did not.

CANNING, ANDREA: That must have said a lot to you.

RACHEL WELLHOUSER (RACHEL WELLHOUSER): Inside, I was screaming. It’ll take five minutes. ten minutes An hour has passed. James has always been quick to respond to any situation.

Brandi, James’ roommate, was concerned by this point and called his manager at the lake.

BRANDI SUGRUE: He never showed up, according to the lake. At the time, I was a little taken aback. “Like, what do you mean he didn’t show up?” I asked. They responded, “No, he didn’t show up,” and it was a kind of a deer in the headlights situation at that point.

After James Chambers’ death, his family was understandably heartbroken.

In 2008, Chambers’ parents, Rachel Wellhouse and James Chambers Sr. lost their other child, Chambers’ brother, to muscular dystrophy.

Since then, the family has had an emergency code word: “Marco,” which means they must contact each other as soon as possible.

When Chambers failed to contact them despite using the code, his mother became concerned and filed a missing person report.

His parents added that while Ashleman’s arrest and confession brought them some closure, they are still looking for their son’s remains. According to TheCinemaholic, they hope to give him the funeral he deserves.

Furthermore, Chambers’ parents have divorced and are now living in different households with their own families.

James Chambers Career

After he went away for several days, James Chambers’ parents filed a missing person report.

Chambers’ previous girlfriend claimed she last saw him leave with Howard Ashleman for his weekend employment, according to The Fayetteville Observer.

The disagreement between Ashleman and Chambers over some undisclosed reasons escalated throughout the brief ride in Ashleman’s vehicle.

Later, Ashleman admitted that he fired a shot into the taxi to terrify Chambers, but the bullet struck him. Chambers died instantly. Chambers’ body was initially burned and buried, but he later dug it up.

After that, he dismembered himself and flung his body into the Cape Fear River.

However, due to a lack of proof, Ashleman was unable to be arrested at the time. Chambers’ body had yet to be found, thus officials had no specific evidence linking him to the case.

Ashleman relocated to Florida and married a woman with whom he discussed the murder details. He had become a member of a religious organization and felt responsible for the crime.

His confession was reported to the police by his wife, and the authorities later worked out a deal with him to surrender in 2017.

It was difficult to get an agreement with Ashleman, but he was finally scheduled on February 12, 2018. Eight days after his arrest, he was found guilty of second-degree murder.

Ashleman received a minimum sentence of 15 years and six months in jail. Chambers’ remains, on the other hand, have yet to be discovered.
