Jake Flint, a 37-year-old Red Dirt musician from Oklahoma, passed away shortly after getting married

As they exchanged vows on Saturday at a secluded homestead between Claremore and Owasso, Oklahoma singer-songwriter Jake Flint and his bride, Brenda, didn’t appear to let the rain dampen their joy.

The day that was intended to be the happiest of his life turned out to be his last as tears of pleasure gave way to tears of grief for his friends and loved ones.

On November 26, the 37-year-old Red Dirt musician and composer Jake Flint of Oklahoma departed away tragically just hours after marrying Brenda Flint, the joy of his life. Jake Flint’s loved ones, friends, and supporters are still processing the tragedy as they reflect on a life and career that were tragically cut short.

“It was rainy, but he’d rented a 40-by-60 circus tent. … They put up a bunch of carpets over the mud and then got two pieces of three-and-a-quarter-inch plywood and set it on the ground — and that was my stage. Jake goes, ‘Is that gonna be all right for you?’ And I go, ‘Jake, that’s perfect.’ A piece of plywood or a flatbed trailer is where I shine,” said Norman-based one-man band Mike Hosty, who played the wedding.

“I still have the mud in my old van … but it was just a fun wedding. And it’s just a tragedy what happened.”

The news that Flint had passed away in his sleep just hours after saying his vows to his bride reached Hosty on Sunday morning.

“He was a singer-songwriter, through and through, and just a big personality, a big heart, and (he’d) bend over backwards to do anything for you. When any musician asks you to play at their wedding, it’s one of those most important days … and it’s always an honor,” Hosty said.

As news of Flint’s unexpected death at the age of 37 spread, it was clear that the Oklahoma music community was in shock and grieving. The Red Dirt singer-songwriter passed away in his sleep after getting married on Saturday, according to his longtime publicist, Clif Doyal, who confirmed the news to The Oklahoman.

“He was not only a client, but he was also a dear friend and just a super nice guy. As you can see from the outpouring on social media, he was loved by everybody. I think a lot of it was just that he was a people person, and he had an amazing sense of humor. He made everybody laugh, and he made everybody feel welcome,” Doyal said.

“He was an ambassador for Oklahoma Red Dirt music.”

Jake Flint’s career.

Flint is a Red Dirt musician who lives in the outlying Claremore, Oklahoma. Jake, the son of a renegade oilman and a dedicated mother of two, was born in 1985 and nurtured in the oilfield boomtown of Holdenville in South Eastern Oklahoma. Jake’s father’s diagnosis of A.L.S., or Lou Gherig’s Disease, prevented him from being able to interact with his son physically, which led to Jake’s first exposure to music.

Jake’s father hired a couple of his lifetime best friends to teach Jake to play the guitar and take him to local bluegrass festivals since he was worried about not being able to play sports with Jake. Jake developed a passion for bluegrass music, which he quickly expanded to include jam bands like Phish, String Cheese Incident, and Bela Fleck & The Flecktones. Jake was motivated to compose his own music at this time.

The discovery of songwriters from the Texas and Oklahoma music scenes, including Tom Skinner, Bob Childers, Boland, Canada, McClure, and Chris Knight, among countless others, marked Jake’s next musical phase. Jake found himself, his musical inspiration, and the beginning of his own singing and songwriting career here.
