Dr. Richard Leakey Age, Family, Early Life
Dr. Richard Leakey was 77 years old. He was born on December 19, 1944, in Nairobi, British Kenya. He was born to his parents, Louis Leakey and Mary Leakey. His father was a curator of the Coryndon Museum and his mother was director of the Leakey excavations at Olduvai. He has two brothers, Jonathan and Philip.
Leakey chose to sustain himself by borrowing £500 from his parents to purchase a Land Rover and starting a trapping and skeleton supply business with Kamoya Kimeu. He was already a good horseman, outdoorsman, Land Rover mechanic, amateur archaeologist, and expedition leader, and he learned to identify bones, all of which pointed to a route he didn’t want to walk just because his father was on it.
Dr. Richard Leakey Career, what was his profession?
Leakey’s career as a paleoanthropologist did not begin with a dateable event or a spontaneous decision, as Louis’ did; he was with his parents on every excavation, was taught every skill, and was assigned a responsible job as a youngster. Plans for the museum had not yet matured when Louis, whether on purpose or not, found a way to remove his combative son from the scene. Louis joined Emperor Haile Selassie and President Jomo Kenyatta for lunch.
Leakey visited Nairobi on the Omo expedition in 1967, and on the way back, the pilot flew over Lake Rudolph (renamed Lake Turkana in 1975) to avoid a thunderstorm. Louis and Richard attended a meeting of the National Geographic Society’s Research and Exploration Committee in 1968 to request funding for Omo. Leakey and Donald Johanson were the most recognized paleoanthropologists at the time, and their scientific ideas on human evolution differed – a scientific rivalry that drew public attention.
In May 1995, Richard Leakey and a group of Kenyan intellectuals formed the Safina Party, which means “Noah’s Ark” in Swahili. Because of extensive corruption, international donor institutions halted aid to Kenya in 1997. Moi chose Richard Leakey as Cabinet Secretary and Head of the civil service in 1999 to appease the donors. Leakey moved to the United States in 2002 to become a professor of anthropology at Stony Brook University in New York. He was also the Turkana Basin Institute’s Chair. Leakey started and chairs Wildlife Direct, a Kenya-based humanitarian organization, in 2004. President Uhuru Kenyatta appointed Leakey as chairman of the Kenya Wildlife Service’s board of directors in 2015. Despite the fact that he was chairman rather than director, Leakey was involved in KWS policies.
