Maynard played collegiately for Rice University for one year before transferring to Texas Western College (now the University of Texas at El Paso). He gained 843 yards rushing on 154 attempts for a 5.4 average as a running back, and he also returned punts and kickoffs. Don played one season in the Canadian Football League with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats after being released by the Giants during their 1959 training camp, catching one pass for 10 yards. He worked as a plumber and a teacher during the off-season.
In 1960, Maynard was the first player to sign with the New York Titans (the team has renamed the Jets in 1963). Despite being mocked by the New York tabloids as an “NFL rejects” in 1960, he combined with Art Powell to become the first professional wide receiver tandem to each collect over 1,000 yards on receptions in a season, a feat they repeated in 1962. Maynard was paired with rookie quarterback Joe Namath in 1965. He collected 1,434 of Namath’s unprecedented 4,007 throwing yards in 1967.
