After a recently released video disproved the family’s claims, the mother of a Connecticut child accused of purposefully setting his 6-year-old neighbor on fire wants the burned boy’s family punished.
In an interview with The Post on Tuesday, Laura Giacobbe urged police to detain the mother of 5-year-old Dominick Krankall for allegedly lying about the April event and putting her kid “through hell.”
“Her child got to go to Yankee Stadium while my child sat inside in fear because of all the statements made against him,” Giacobbe, 45, said from her home in Bridgeport.
“I want her to get arrested because I don’t think it’s fair. It’s defamation of character,” Giacobbe continued. “She slandered my family and put my son through hell. She put me in hell. I want her arrested for false statements.”
Dominick Krankall allegedly sustained second and third-degree burns after being targeted by an 8-year-old bully on April 24 while playing in his Bridgeport backyard.
However, a video posted by the Giacobbe family on Friday depicts four kids, including Dominick, starting fires and kicking a flaming soccer ball about in the backyard.
Dominick caught fire after kicking or walking on a plastic cup filled with gasoline that was on fire; nevertheless, there is no evidence of the other guys pursuing Dominick in the video.
The event provoked community outrage and a flood of assistance for the hurt child, who has since been discharged from the hospital.
Mayor of Bridgeport
A parade outside the hospital where Dominick was receiving treatment was organized by the mayor of Bridgeport, local first responders, and numerous community members. Since then, an online fundraising campaign has helped Dominick’s family raise close to $600,000.
Stefano, 8, and Lorenzo, 11, were among the children Maria Rua, Dominick’s mother, who was meant to be watching them on the day of the incident, according to Giacobbe, a former neighbor.
“I saw Maria by the sink wiping the child’s face with the wash rag and seeing the skin come off his face because she was wiping it. I was screaming to her that he needed to get into the tub because his leg was on fire and she wasn’t aware of that,” Giacobbe said of the moment she arrived back at the house after running her errands.
“At the same time [she was] making a phone call to the police department, stating that ‘the eight-year-old boy downstairs took gasoline, poured it on my child and lit him on fire.’ Those were her exact words.”
The Krankalls claimed that Giaccobe’s son Stefano cruelly bullied Dominick by dousing a ball in gasoline, lighting it on fire, and tossing it at his face. The incident shook their community and prompted a police inquiry, according to the Krankalls.
But Giacobbe claimed Rua’s story is nothing but fiction, saying the surveillance footage showing the kids playing peacefully “all day long” proves what happened was just a horrible accident, not a deliberate attack.
“[They were] playing, riding bikes…there was no bullying at all with the children,” the mom said, insisting, “My child, Stefano Giacobbe, is not a bully.”
According to the video, the kids started using gasoline to play, and one of them even set a soccer ball on fire. Krankall is seen in the video kicking the ball and then wiping gasoline off of his clothes.
