Former players have formed a guard of honor to commemorate David Mundy’s equaling of Fremantle’s games record ahead of today’s western derby.

Mundy arrived at Optus Stadium with his wife and three children to prepare for game 353 of the season, in which he will tie former superstar Matthew Pavlich.

To mark the occasion, Pavlich had presented a special presentation to Mundy inside the Fremantle locker room.

Pavlich, Aaron Sandilands, Paul Duffield, Garrick Ibbotson, Tendai Mzungu, Lee Spurr, Roger Hayden, Michael Johnson, Nick Suban, Ryan Murphy, Anthony Morabito, Stephen Hill, Tommy Sheridan, Alex Silvagni, and Jon Griffin were among those waiting for him on the field.

His two oldest children were giddy with anticipation and dashed through the banner before the rest of the Dockers were ready.

Who could blame them, though, with the number 353 on the back of their sweaters?

The banner also paid homage to Hill as he prepares to retire.

“Mundy game 353, joins Pav in Freo history,” it read. HIlly #32, I bid you farewell. Thank you so much, stars!”

The Dockers will be desperate to win not only to halt an 11-game losing record in western derbies, but also to honor their former skipper.

Mundy has been a standout for Fremantle since joining the club as a defender from country Victoria and has progressed into a fantastic midfielder who captained the team and was awarded the Norm Smith Medal in 2013 grand final.

However, this is far from Mundy’s final tour. He’s already signed a contract for next season, and given his exceptional play in 2021, it’d take a courageous person to believe he won’t be able to extend his career beyond that and threaten the incredible 400-game mark.

Fremantle selected Mundy with the 19th overall pick in the 2003 AFL Draft. The Western Bulldogs traded this pick to Fremantle in exchange for Steven Koops. He was assigned to the Subiaco Football Club in the West Australian Football League when he moved to WA in 2004. (WAFL).

He played with Subiaco for the whole 2004 season and was a member of their premiership team. In 2005, his impressive WAFL form continued, and he was selected by Fremantle to make his AFL debut against Melbourne at the MCG in Round 6. Mundy’s poise and control in defense saw him keep his spot in the side for the remaining 17 games of the season.

Professional Career

The AFL recognized him in round 14 by nominating him for the AFL Rising Star award. With 15 votes, he finished third behind Brett Deledio and Ryan Griffen in the final voting. He has also named the finest young talent on the Fremantle list in 2005, winning the Beacon Award.

Mundy had a strong start to the 2008 season and was moved to a midfield role late in the season to take advantage of his kicking abilities.  He played his 100th game in 2009, making him only the eighth player in league history to do it straight from the start.  From his debut to a late withdrawal due to stomach cramps before the Round 17, 2010 match against the Western Bulldogs, he played 124 straight games.

2010 was his greatest season to date, and he was chosen to the All-Australian team’s 40-man squad, as well as winning the Doig Medal as Fremantle’s best player for the year.  There was widespread conjecture at the close of the 2010 season that Mundy would not be re-signed by Fremantle and would either return to Melbourne or be recruited by the new Gold Coast Football Club. 

He turned down all other offers, though, and re-signed with Fremantle for another four years in September 2010.  He later re-signed for another three years at the end of 2014.  Early in the 2017 season, he extended his contract for another year.
