Carol Leigh, the activist who coined the term “s*x work,” has died at the age of 71.

Carol Leigh passed away on Wednesday from cancer, according to Kate Marquez, the administrator of her estate, the San Francisco Chronicle reported on Thursday.

Leigh, a former prostitute, dedicated her life to advocating for individuals working in the s*x work industry a phrase she created for a panel discussion she attended at a feminist anti-p*rnography conference in 1978.

Biography

Carol Leigh was born in New York City, New York, on January 11, 1951(71 years old). She holds an American nationality and she belongs to the white ethnicity. Her Zodiac sign is Capricorn.

Carol Leigh attended Binghamton University (1968-1970), Empire State College (1972-1974), where she received a BA in creative writing, and Boston University (1974–75).

Leigh started creating films in 1985 and has won prizes from the American Film Institute for Mother’s Mink, Outlaw Poverty, Not Prostitutes, and Yes Means Yes, No Means No. Leigh created the San Francisco S*x Worker Film and Arts Festival in 1999, and she also collaborates with Erica Elena and Jovelyn Richards to promote it.

Carol Leigh began contributing heavily to the San Francisco Task Force on Prostitution in 1993, and her report on the legalization of pr*stitution was released in 1996. Leigh was awarded a grant from the Creative Work Fund in 2006 to launch the S*x Worker Media Library in association with the Center for S*x & Culture.
