Abdalla Hamdok is a Sudanese politician who served as Sudan’s 15th Prime Minister from 2019 to 2022. Hamdok held a number of national and international administrative posts prior to his appointment. He served as the Deputy Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa from November 2011 until October 2018. (UNECA).

Hamdok was regarded by UNECA employees as a “diplomat, a humble man, and a clever and disciplined mind.” In August 2019, Hamdok was mentioned as a possible candidate for Sudanese Prime Minister in the 2019 Sudanese transition to democracy.

Abdalla Hamdok Resigns After Mass Protests

Sudan’s Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok has resigned following another day of intense protests in Khartoum. Thousands marched in protest of a recent agreement he made to share power with the army, which launched a coup in October. Protesters chanted “Power to the people” and demanded a return to genuine civilian authority. However, armed forces responded with force once more, killing two people. Mr. Hamdok’s choice to resign gives the army complete power.

It is yet another setback for Sudan’s delicate attempts at democratic transition after a popular uprising in 2019 resulted in the removal of Sudan’s long-term authoritarian President Omar al-Bashir. Mr. Hamdok stated in a televised address that the country was at a “dangerous turning point that threatens its very survival.” He stated that he had done all possible to keep the country from “sliding into calamity,” but that “despite everything that has been done to create a consensus… it has not happened.”

Abdalla Hamdok is 66 years old. He was born on January 1, 1956, in AI-Dibaibat, Sudan. However, we don’t have any information regarding his parents. He was suggested as the candidate for Prime Minister of Sudan in August 2019.

Following the handover of power from the Transitional Military Council to the Sudanese Sovereignty Council, the Sovereignty Council nominated Hamdok as Prime Minister for the duration of the transition. On August 21, 2019, he was sworn in. During the October 2021 Sudanese coup, he was kidnapped and taken to an unknown destination. The European Union, the United States, and other Western nations have said that they continue to recognize the Hamdok cabinet as “the transitional government’s constitutional leaders.” As part of an arrangement with the military, all political detainees were released on November 21, 2021, and Hamdok was reinstalled as prime minister.

Abdalla Hamdok Career, what was his profession?

Hamdok served as a senior official in Sudan’s Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning from 1981 until 1987. In the 1990s, Hamdok worked at Deloitte & Touche and then at the International Labor Organization in Zimbabwe, before spending several years at the African Development Bank in Côte d’Ivoire. In September 2018, Hamdok was nominated as Sudan’s Minister of Finance by President Omar al-Bashir, but he declined.

A spokeswoman for the Forces of Freedom and Change (FFC) suggested in June 2019 and The Sudan Daily in August 2019 that Hamdok will be presented as Prime Minister of Sudan by the FFC, which negotiated the 2019 Sudanese transition to democracy with the Transitional Military Council (TMC). On August 20, the Sudanese Sovereignty Council selected Hamdok as Prime Minister, as required by the Draft Constitutional Declaration. On the 21st of August, he was sworn in. Hamdok appointed a cabinet of ministers as prime minister. On October 4, 2019, he purged the leadership of Sudan’s state universities, firing 28 chancellors and 35 vice-chancellors while appointing 34 vice-chancellors. The goal was to replace those in positions of power who represented the al-Bashir regime.

In a televised statement on January 2, 2022, Hamdok announced his resignation as Prime Minister, stating that a roundtable discussion was required to reach a new accord for Sudan’s political transition to democracy.
